is 10/20/30/40 vesting schedule common?

i know amazon and snapchat do it. but the company im talking to took a step further.. the vesting only happens at the end of each year, so if I leave at the 47th month, I’d get only 60% rather than ~100%..

would you even consider this offer? they let me trade equity for base as much as I wish, so maybe i’d just take an all cash, or almost all cash offer?

      Sort of.. especially the second year sign on.. but other companies don't do the cruel vesting AND give you sign on. And do you know how many people leave Amazon before year 3? It was over 50% for my org when I was working at Amazon.

      There is no cruel vesting at Amazon - they pay you in cash for the first two years every month the amount you agreed to as your annual compensation. We’re not talking about 10-50K sign on here, it starts at 100K+ for the low level jobs.

      I've worked at Amazon for 4 years and know about plenty of offers that co-workers got and have comparisons with offers from other companies. It's cruel vesting. Low level like new grad isn't gonna get 100k+ each of first two years as sign on... In fact sign on for first two years combined is almost always lower than Facebook sign on for the first year.

      But I agree sign on for L6+ can be pretty substantial at Amazon. It makes sense cuz Amazon business philosophy is to compete for higher levels but believe lower level engineers are easily replaceable.

      Came to say this. And vest starts pretty much after your first month, no 1 year cliff for vesting

    It seems uncommon. In fact, anecdotal evidence from here is that Google is going the other way with a 40/28/20/12 schedule for some offers.

      I got the 40/28/20/12 vesting with Google (start in a few weeks). Assuming refreshers and promo will kick in to make up for comp decline

      But how about when you consider I vesting the excess from Y1 then comparing? The time value of your money is being completely left out here.

      If I had accelerated vesting I probably would have bought a house a couple years ago, which would have definitely been beneficial.

    All cash offer is a no-brainer if they offer it. A stock in Snap is a stock in Snap. But cash could be any stock, it could even be a stock in Snap.

      It's not same.
      With stocks , u are offered all at the start but u get the last chunk after 4 years. So that can have a good potential to double or triple.
      But will money, u can't buy 4 years of stocks at a time
