Got an offer from Wayfair. Position: Software Engineer L2 YOE: 2 years Total Compensation offered: 160k for first year and 150k from second year on. Current total compensation in Austin: 105k ( including equity bonus) Wondering shall i make a shift from Austin to Boston or not. I appreciate your help.
Please don't. You'll thank me later. It's not a place you'd grow as an engineer.
What do you think of joining for 4-6 months then jumping to another company?
Sure, if the other alternative is remaining jobless in the 4-6 months, then that works.
Tc is decent
How cheap is Boston when comapred to Bay area ?
2.5-3k monthly rent for 1 bed room condo apartment near Boston city
That looks same as Bay area. It is an average package in my opinion.
Fine if you don’t mind living like a grad student in Alston/Brighton with five roommates in an apartment that was dirty 80 years ago
Ask for more. According to h1b data, you can get 135k base. Similarly ask for more equity as well. I'd also explicitly ask for no PHP.
This guy knows what's up. Median TC for L2 is probably near $150k or so
I'd pass on Wayfair in general. Find another place that allows you to grow.
I'd think by now even Boeing can't be as screwed up as Wayfair
Hows wayfair doing in general? What i have heard is wayfair has been growing at the rate of 30%. My hiring team mostly work in c#, aerospike, kafka.
I would recommend you to join Wayfair based on technologies you mentioned. I joined last year and really liked the culture at Wayfair. Sometimes you might get unlucky and be a part of shitty team but there is always an option to switch companies after 6-7 months if you don't like it here.
Why 6-7 months and not another number
6-7 months is enough time to get a deep understanding of the tech stack, complete a few major projects, and get a good feel for how engineering works. So if you don’t like the place, you can leave after 6-7 months and still have gotten some good experience/exposure to that business. A lot of people stay a year because of stocks and bonuses, but if the place isn’t to your liking, I’d argue that a year is too long as it gets repetitive. Also, your next employer should make it worth it financially to move on at any time.
How was the interview process like?
Was fairly standard like anyotjer tech company algo, system, sql and HR round.
OP, did you end up joining Wayfair? Can you please share how I should prepare for onsite interview? Leetcode easy and mediums? What for system design? Thanks.
