my friend got an offer at zillow as a SWE and she was wondering if she should take it or not and why. would love to see your perspectives. thanks! TC 180k
Depends very highly on the team. DM me for details. Otherwise, the general answer is no.
@Zillow folks how do you feel about your home flipping business? You guys lose a lot of money doing it.. you don’t have the advantage that redfin has of running a brokerage too, curious as to your thoughts
Me personally, I’m more worried about Compass than I am about Redfin. I think that a home-flipping business is not a tech business and people are right to say that Compass and Opendoor etc. should be valuated as real-estate companies, not tech companies. Naturally, I feel the same about the house-flipping part of Z. Given that they aren’t a tech business, I don’t know whether it’s going to work or whether it’s worth going into all this debt. It’s just not my domain. My advice is to LC and be ready.

It's never about company, it's about team you landup in. If your team and manager is good then it's good place or else you will not like your job in any company.
Actually sometimes it IS about the company and it’s exec leadership, not just the team you end up in. Examples: WeWork, Theranos, Enron, etc. If you’re on the Titanic it doesn’t matter that much which seat you got on the sinking ship, you will have a bad time, even if you have a lifeboat it really sucks to watch your colleagues go down and the chaos and low morale won’t be fun. Aim for a good team in a winning company with solid leadership.
Don't touch it even with a stick. Leadership is bad. There are rumors of layoff coming. All the good talents are abandoning the ship.

Fair warning to those reading this thread. Zillow is undergoing an intense period of change right now and some people are incapable of dealing with it. Our Blind room is usually the same 8-10 people whining nonstop. Take what you hear with an enormous grain of salt.
Get off blind, Dan Spaulding
Zillow lounge in Blind is indeed full of people complaining (way more than 8-10) because they can’t complain non-anonymously directly to leadership without facing punitive consequences.
But what if number of people incapable is more than capable? Is the change good then?
wait aren’t you on a Zillow blind account?
Yes, it's an awesome place for new hires. Salaries are decent compared to WLB. Don't except stocks to increase significantly.

Worried that our top performer is an attrition risk. How do managers handle this?

I believe that the two things that matter most are 1) executive leadership, and 2) the boss you’re directly reporting too. Depending on the company’s size and stage, the weighting will change; but in my 10+ years in industry these are the two biggest factors I consider when looking at an opportunity.
