I am 29 with 6 years healthcare exp 80k TC in south florida my job does not do any real development more like managing and customizing healthcare workflows in a EHR using the goverment vista program. I am looking to be more technical and get much higher TC with MS in SWE should i do this and would i have to take a junior dev job or intern?
Let me leave this here for you: https://thehftguy.com/2017/01/23/career-advice-and-salary-negotiations-move-early-and-move-often/
I hear ya just tryna to see is SWE worth jumping into if I’m going to make 90k in next 2 years will I have to take a step down to step up to maybe 100k or is the 200k+ tc really possible outside of Bay fang
Yes 200k + TC is totally possible outside of Bay FANG. Especially since if you get stuck in government jobs your opportunities will alway be underpaid and overworked. Additionally you shouldn't have to take a step down to step up. This will be a step up and your future opportunities will only get better. Your TC shouldn't drop if you play your cards right (leetcode like you fucking life depends on it). Good luck dude/dudette!
This thread is dead dead.. but I'm posting to see if you still emil notifications because I'm in the same exact spot lol

Is your current degree an MS in SWE or are you asking if you should get that? If the latter, what is your current degree in. There are junior positions that pay around what you currently make or more. I know in my state(Michigan), a lot of computer science majors make around 65-75k right out of college. If your position is similar, you might be able to negotiate higher than entry level pay.
Depending on your local job market or where you'd be willing to move you might be able to make more. I had a friend who graduated CIS with 2.2 GPA and got a software developer position paying around 80k in Denver, he didn't even know what a linked list was. he job hopped a few times over 2 years and is making over 100k now.
I have a undergrad in finance never used it found my way into healthcare tech after working for healthcare consulting for a year then went into informatics but I wouldn’t say I have any industry standard programming skills so I’m thinking getting a MS in swe. I’m in the Miami Fort Lauderdale am I gonna find a dev job higher than 80-90k I’ll probably make 90k in next 2 /3 years willing to move but not to the bay
