I'm sure anyone smart enough to join Lyft factored this into their TC numbers.

Then ex-googlers at uber or lyft right now must be outliers of the breed

I'm pretty sure he meant that you would assume most would have factored in the chance of a drop or gain in the stock. Just like if you were moving to a role with large variable compensation, you think about the range of what your achievement might be when evaluating what your total comp could be.

    • Google / Eng ElverG
Correct, I'd have considered a 50% drop as a bad (but probable) scenario.

And yeah I have shorted both Lyft and Uber a couple times, though mostly in the 4 figure range for gains since I tend to hedge my bets.

Then, why would engineers join a company if it were going downhill? Isn’t it bad for his career?
      Oct 3
    • Chase / Creative dotvector
When people join, they believe in the hype for a shot of the upside. Why does anyone join venture backed companies, take salary cuts, and work longer hours...

Most of Google is working on "other than ads". Apps, Chrome, Android, Cloud, Maps, Gmail, etc. I don't know anyone in the Seattle area working on ads. I'm building a cloud service that I think should be pretty awesome for GCP users.

Oh, and DO is pretty cool.

Lyft employees joining pre IPO got stock at $47. So not down by a lot, although no gains as thought. Uber is even more fucked up. Pre IPO stock was at 49
    Oct 1 28
    • OpenText RIP Theon😢
@Facebook guy: That applies to public companies. For most pre-IPO companies, the RSUs are taxed at IPO price during IPO, which was the case for Uber.
      Oct 3
    • Google wlkaway
@uber. Your initial stock amount to units conversion would have happened at price at last computed price of stock not at IPO price. So if you joined in last 3 years, it would be at $49.
      Oct 3
    • Uber has7ydh
@google sure, but that's orthogonal. This thread is about gains tax, so that $49 price is still irrelevant when it comes to taxes, and therefore irrelevant to the thread.
      Oct 5
    • Google wlkaway
Lol your initial number of stock depends on that and hence your taxes as well (partly though).

But don't you need to still pay taxes at $72 on the vested shares at IPO date?
Especially for those people with a lot of RSUs vested and went through IPO.
      Oct 2
    • Lyft / Eng anonamon
Yes you do. If you had more than $1M vested at that date then the company covered pretty much all the taxes for you. Otherwise the company only covered 22% so you got kind of screwed

I’ve been through it twice and from my experience if your unvested shares get converted into unvested shares of new company while keeping old schedule - you got good deal.
If your company circling the drain and top brass looking for best deal to exist, they will try to get rid off any liabilities in order to get best price for current shareholders. In that case all unvested shares simply forgiven and forgotten.

Look back to Facebook IPO. It went through the same thing ... down to $18.xx . Now it’s over $170, and may be in a down trend due to legal issues. So it’s risk and reward if you are young, take risk my friends.

Ride sharing is a big market. There is room for both companies. FB, Snap, Twitter , LinkedIn they are all thriving. Snap may be not so much at the moment. If one like the work and his team, then take the chances. Hopefully we can avoid a recession.

We have 3.2 billion in the bank. Recession is perfect setup for Lyft. We control the marketplace-both supply and demand levers.

Classifying driver as employees is icing on cake - improves efficiency and reduces insurance costs. We will do more profitable rides by increasing price of low cost ones.
