Planning to move to Canada end of this year for peace of mind and stability. ( In US on H1B and have Canadian PR). Currently in the Bay Area making ~200k in sales. How comparable are opportunities in tech? Anything I should be wary of other than the pay cut (30-40%) and winters?
FYI you get a 30-40% paycut in pure numbers but don't forget to add another 30% due to weaker Canadian Dollar. It's just what you value most, PoM or cash? Personally for me PoM is better option as you can always move back to USA under TN1 Visa after becoming a Canadian Citizen
Yes everyone's on this path of TN visa. I don't even know how guaranteed you will get the visa. I heard from friends now they are issuing for 1 year not 3 ..
As long as NAFTA (or whatever the new equivalent name is) is there, TN1 visa would most likely be there.. it allows US citizens to work in Canada aswell so I don't see this arrangement go away.. and from what I am aware of, TN1 is renewable multiple times so even if they give you 1 year initially instead of 3 it doesn't really matter as you can get it renewed.
Concur with the comments, expect a pay cut. 200k does not grow on trees up north
I live in Toronto. I go to alot of meetups and now days every 3rd person is from US. Job market is so small and the competition is insane with inflow. Even directors don't make 150k here :( sad
Weak Canadian dollar, taxes, nominal pay cut, weather, lack of opportunities, competition, lack of dating scene. All are not great, even though I love Canada. Maybe find companies here that will move you towards a PR quickly and where you can feel stability... Unless you’re Indian an need to wait forever. Bloomberg will do that for you and as much as I complain about them, that’s one thing they do right and they almost never PIP and fire unless you’re literally the bottom performer in the ORG (not the team). They will start your PR within a year of your start date usually.
It will be a different kind of hassle. On the USA you suffer with visa. On Canada you suffer with afording a home and retiring, as you earn way less. As a L6 in Amazon Vancouver, it is impossible to buy a single family home and save money to retire.
Yes I totally agree , Toronto's housing market crazy as well. Not sure when we can afford a single family home. Even renting a condo is so expensive in downtown :(
I thought 700k should get one in toronoto or suburb?
I've heard Canadian market is more competitive to enter than US. My suggestion would be to start approaching the companies you are interested in
