Kind of a lengthy read but I’m lost 15 yrs of exp Total comp 160k, no bonus, no stock, no sign on, dc area I’ve spent the vast majority of my career in the SAP space primarily, in a now depricated solution that SAP no longer promotes, doing massive implementations. I’m not a developer and the past 4 years, I’ve been doing cloud DB migrations but I am not a DBA either, I can manage projects because I’ve been through so many projects but don’t have certs in agile or a pmp Problem is that the tech world pretty much works in agile now and SAP runs waterfall and I feel lost in interviews I don’t have any cloud certs and I’m 99% sure my last company where i was a consultant, set me up for failure when I went to interview with AWS because all my questions were related to exodus from said company One of my mentors who also left the company said leave and go be a solution architect, client partner or sales engineer because you have a great personality, very personable and can speak tech. “Get out of the behind the scenes technical roles because you can’t compete with the Indians” All my friends agreed with that sentiment. I was very fortunate to get a solution architect job locally with a staffing agency claiming to be a consultancy but 45 days in, I’ve come to find out that the company is a sinking ship with absolutely no new sales this year and with a massive turn over. I’m not doing anything related to the position I interviewed for and my manager is making me develop a full blown app where an actual developer failed at. Ive interated to him as well as others including the interview process that I’m not a developer but it hasn’t stopped me from trying because I do have bills to pay. It does feel like he’s setting me up for failure because he repeatedly blows of my one on ones and exploratory meetings I schedule to answer some related questions about the assignment. I’m not happy here and Ive explained the dynamics to wife and friends whats going on here and they all say the same, your manager is a dick but I’ve also had some tough luck where the past 2 years, medical and financial which has caused me to get separated from 3 jobs in 2 years. My problem is that If I leave here, it’d be a 4th job. My other problem is that I can’t get interviews in sales positions like Sales Engineer because my career has been primarily delivery based post sales. it seems the same with customer success or account managers/exec roles which I know Ill thrive in. Implementation manager or PM jobs because I don’t have the certs. At this point I just need someone to take a flyer on me because my resume looks good, just not specific to some of the roles I’m applying to.. Got a kid on the way so really lost and just need some help or guidance Thanks for reading and apologize for the long post
I'm not in your industry but I can relate to how having years of experience can actually be a burden... The way I would do it is to reach out to others in the sales engineering roles, say on LinkedIn. See if you can get a f2f meeting.
1. Any of your old bosses willing to hire you? I would start there, even if on a contract basis. 2. The jumping around in two years doesn't have to show on your resume. You have 15 years of experience, you can take a year off. 3. Fairfax county offers a discounted PMP certification course. Look into it. The whole DC area thrives on certifications and jargon and you need to speak the same lingo 4. Since you are in DC, have you considered the CIA? I am not joking. They are hiring and they want loyalty and a modicum of intelligence. If you have that you should be fine.
Is SAP dying?
Anyone think site reliability is a good fit ?
Try Salesforce
If you really are personable and can communicate well, you should be able to find work as an SE. I can tell you right now that SAP is a big target for a Google in the enterprise cloud space, and a specialist pre-sales engineer with SAP experience would be a solid hire. Send me a DM.
🙌 I hope this works out!
If it doesn’t, please DM me. I’m thinking TPM (and you don’t need the certs if you have experience).
