i started a new job this week as a print graphic designer. my previous job i was a digital graphic designer. in my interview for this new job, my now current boss was aware that i was only doing digital design. i had some print pieces in my portfolio from my second job out of school, but nothing that would come off that i was a strong print designer. in the interview my boss stated that there was a portion of the job that would be production related. this includes setting file up for print, image prepping, designing in different languages etc. i was honest and stated that i knew the basics production but i wasnt an expert. i started the job and it’s been hard for me. i messed up a project that was given to me and my boss told me to recheck everything before sending it to the printer. i am trying to learn the production aspect as much as i can with no guidance. the senior level designer who is on my team left for maternity leave on my second day. my boss checks in on me twice a day for 5 minutes because she is so busy. i feel as if i am unqualified because i am struggling a lot with the projects im given. i dont have anyone to turn to for guidance. my boss told me that they are going to hire a freelancer while the senior designer is on maternity. so im hoping then ill have more guidance. i feel stressed because i want to be good at my job, but i feel like im failing. it is only my 3rd day, but i feel like maybe my boss is expecting more out of me. i also feel like maybe i “talked” myself up too much in the interview. should i talk with my boss and say i dont have much print design experience and need more guidance? i dont want to loose my job, but i dont want to feel like my boss is expecting more from me that i cant handle. for background, im 26 living in nyc. i only make 72k a year.
Watch YouTube videos and join active design fb groups where ppl answer questions fast so if you have questions you can get responses. I don’t think print and digital is that different just consider the basics when you send file to print like bleed vs non bleed, sizing, clarity, how you save. +1 on LinkedIn learnings yoh can learn everything from Lynda our former designers did it’s not called LinkedIn learning. Worst case look into help from fivver they’re online all the time and have fast turnout time ask if they do export for you
The fact that you are concerned and trying shows you really care. Most people don't give a shit.
Ask your boss if there is someone who can help and train you during your first few weeks on the job. This isn't really your fault: no one knows everything on their first day on the job. They should have someone there to train the newbies.
This. +1. Also, read up as much as you can on the areas you’re struggling with. Follow thought leadership blogs, read books, etc. - whatever you can do to keep learning.
Give your boss feedback on what you need, but make sure to present it with what you need to do better. If you let it stir it only gets worse. You could also find someone else to shadow if that is available.
Can you print in a more economical way a rough draft? Use just black and white or a cheaper material?
Stay in there! I understand how stressful this can be. Does your boss have a background in print design and production? Have you been honest about your feelings with your boss (maybe go out for coffee or lunch, sometimes it’s easier to have these conversations outside the office)? Maybe your boss have help find a solution, like help get you the right training with a workshop or class. LinkedIn Learnings might be helpful
Yes she’s the design director and has been at the company for 9 years. I told her today I’m trying to learn everything. I think she understands but I’m still stressed.
