Hi, I've been offered an L4 position at AWS Dublin as an SDE, I have 5 years of experience working as a Software Engineer and currently I am a Senior Software Engineer at my current org, my resume consists of working only at mid sized startups (companies that have been in business for 8 - 9 years) in India, in my current organization I have a very good salary by Indian standards and it is one of the leading e-commerce startup in India.

I want to know is it worth it going to AWS Dublin considering they are giving me an entry level L4 position and is the position negotiable ? I want to go because I don't have a big brand like Microsoft, Google, FB, Amazon on my resume, I want to go into product management in future most likely in 2 years. I have graduated from one of the IITs.

the compensation details are 78k eur base + 12k eur 1st year bonus, 20 RSUs of amazon.com.
I have looked into rent in dublin and it ranges mostly around 2500 eur per month that almost as much as people earn in Berlin per month.

I want your advice, what should I do in this situation ?

Don't join at L4. Your path to L5 will be as long as that for a new grad.

It won't be straight forward and may involve more rounds of interviewing. Joining at L4 with 5 yoe is setting your career back by 3.5 years. Ask your recruiter to schedule another loop at L5, if you could make L4 bar then chances are you will do well at L5 loop also.

If your not married, take the option , explore EU , once you get to SDE2, transfer to US/Canada.

Level - Depends if you were evaluated for SDE1 or SDE2 position, if you were evaluated for SDE2 and offered SDE1 , you are definitely raising the bar for sde 1 but not for SDE2, so they offered you SDE1.
Comp- it’s hard but you can ask the recruiter to arrange a call with HM and discuss with HM about roles and responsibilities for this position and explain why the offer is not appealing enough. HM has the final call here. Or get a competitive offer.

Doesn't look enticing. If you want to move out of India and have global exposure, it's a good option.

How much do you think would be a good comp for Dublin ?

It’s a good offer for Dublin. Google Dublin offers similar base salary numbers for L3 hires (which maps to Amazon L4). You can negotiate on stocks. Probably ask for 10 more shares.

Another thing to note is that it’s not hard to go from L4 to L5 in Amazon. Most people do it in 1-1.5 years. Plus Dublin has a really solid tech scene with Google, Facebook, Microsoft, Salesforce, Indeed and a bunch of other companies present too.

It’s a slightly depressing weather in that it’s rainy and dark for a large time. Plus it gets you closer to Europe but it’s not schengen so you won’t have direct access to all of Europe.

If you want a bigger brand on your resume, slightly higher savings, access to a lot of nice travel and you’re okay with a down level, you should take it.

In any case - always negotiate. Try hard negotiating for the level. If it doesn’t, negotiate on the stocks.
