do you send your kids to private school? i do, and it costs an arm and a leg. wondering if its worth it. if i was rich yes it would but household income is only $270k. want to hear your take. edit: just to clarify when i say private i mean top tier feeder schools to ivy
I don’t have kids yet, but I live in an area with good public schools. I went to public schools and they were fantastic. I know private school kids who grew up in a bubble of rich kids, and didn’t understand the value of a dollar. I think it depends on the kids (do they need a STEM school because their super motivated?), and the public school district you live in if it’s worth it.
It's just like good ole corporate world, if you're not happy with the people you gotta churn them out. If you're not happy with your kid's school friends move to another school. In most cases it's a private school.
I went to private school. Not worth it
Did you go to an ivy league college?
I'm curious.. Exactly how much does private school cost each year? Excluding costs of supplies or things you'd be paying for in public schools anyway..
$30k for the top schools
You mean private school for high schooling , correct ?
If you only have one kid, the math could work out in favor of private school (vs expensive home in good school district).
If you're a smart, motivated parent who has good wlb and can work from home... Why not home school them for a while and really teach them the good stuff?
Parent involvement matters more than public or private. If both parents work and have no time for kids education then private is your best bet as there's more of spoon feeding in private schools with a lower students to teacher ratio. If you choose a private school make sure to check out their holidays calendar and make sure you can afford the camps during the school closure on top of the private school tuition
Yes just finding out camps are expensive
It really matters a lot on the environment. I'm from Australia so it may not apply here, but in my friend group, about half went to public schools and half went to private. The people that went to private are generally much worse off, they all went to college but didn't do that great etc, despite paying exorbitant fees. Obviously this depends on what public schools are available in your area. Unfortunately it's really a case by case basis here.
Thank you for this. I agree i think kids need to struggle and not make things easy for them
On this topic, I do think private school kids tend to be more “bubbled”. Eventually they’re going to have to take standardized tests like everyone else and sit in a lecture hall with 300 students in university. They’re not always going to get that low student:teacher ratio. And they won’t always be surrounded by kids with similar backgrounds, motivation, or parent wealth.
It’s only worth it if you have zero good public schools nearby (and everyone does private). Or if you are so rich that you can afford the upper echelon of private schooling with other billionaires. Anything in between is just a money grab.

Not worth, teach your kids to teach themselves
Yes but why not stack the odds in their favor?
there is no guarantee that private school will set up your kids for success. The best education starts at home
