I’m passionate about ML/stat/math, thus I’m always searching for chance to be data scientist or MLE in tech industry. But now I’m emoving to NYC thus fintech/hf/ib seems another option. But I clearly know it’s way more rewarding but challenging for CS background to be quant in finance industry. I may need another MFE degree to compete with math/physics PhD? So in terms of career growth, feasibility and ROI, quant in finance vs DS/MLE in tech, which one ?
It’s much easier to get hired as swe than quant at a hedge fund / prop trading firm, especially if you have a CS degree. In general, SWE > DS. The only exception is high end quant finance which is a niche role with uncertain future prospects.
Thx! I agree. But for finance tech roles, swe seems like second-class citizen. If I’d like to be swe, I’ll jump back to west coast but not nyc. Also I really like math, and hopefully find a career that combines coding and math.
It’s better to be a second class citizen at a top tier hedge fund rather than a pseudo first class citizen at a no name fund with much lower pay.
