#regionalism in companies

Facing apparent regionalism in VMware office. The director is a Telugu and and he promoted an MTS to senior MTS . This guy came in the team after us, not so great in coding, not that great in anything else as well except that he is from Andhra and can speak Telugu . I have been around for past four years and have trained him from architecture to coding practices and what not. Now, he is my senior and I am still at the same level, it may have been me, but there are four other team members who are both senior and more capable than him.Director also makes rules that he himself never follows and sabotages against anyone going against his “verbatim” wishes. I never heard a Marathi or tamilian doing this! Heard similar stories about Telugus from people of other companies who work here, is it same in Other areas as well?what do you folks suggest that I should do?

P.S. Andhra is a state in south India.
P.S. I am not saying that everyone from that state is like that, but I have observed a strong trend of this happening. Also I had roommates who were from consultancies and faked their resumes to get jobs, all of them were from Andhra!

Dude don't extrapolate one guy's behavior to a whole two states. Maybe your director is an asshole. But that doesn't mean all telugus are.

Every single Telugu person I know has faked his way into any company. This is to such an extent that these guys have started believing that that’s the normal way of finding a job. I totally failed to explain this one guy that he could find job by approaching recruiters on linked or applying on company’s job portal. Many people fake to show more years of experience and get a higher salary. I don’t want to generalize but this is my experience.

I have seen similar cases where they fake resume projects and what not. I just know two gus who are genuine. Rest of the people have resorted to unfair means. I think this could be attributed to the fact that they are more used to the rat race from early school. And let me get this straight. This trend could be observed now in other Indian people too.

All I can say is that because of these fake people all other genuine guys who worked hard, studies at reputed universities suffer.

Op must be a master who failed at his own game and bitching as the last resort. This will get you nowhere. Your focus is clearly at a wrong angle pulling entire population into this.

Voicing my observations is necessary, someone has to point it out and if an American does this, all will gang up against him/her and claim racism,so better that I do it.

Replace the language there with your mother tongue. And imagine someone saying that about someone from your region. How do you feel?

We will call a spade a spade , not pretend that all is hunky dory. If you’re upright, you do not need to take it personally as I mentioned not all, but many. Additionally, if you still feel hurt then call such people out in community events, so that others don’t have to.

Why didn't you call all Spade's a spade? You saw this only with this region in your career? There are other regions which are far worse. And if you really want to address the favoritism, don't target a particular community. This effort seems like maligning rather than being a crusader for change.

I am doing my part by raising it and it seems to emanate more from one area rather than any other! That region is not the culprit, some people from that region are. I am not blaming all, but those who are malpracticing and in the process defaming the rest of the country too.... Check it at your own door so, others don’t come complaining. I know it’s hurtful to hear such things about one’s region especially if you are not doing it.

Wtf..I know exactly what you are saying . Yes this happens when only technical people with no leadership qualities are promoted to director level who have no people skill and are only comfortable dealing with same language speaking people .

Whole world is discriminating against us. Look at the number of racist, hate and stereotyping posts on blind against Indians (One every 6 hours). Least we can do is not discriminate against each other. #peace

Least indians can do is be honest and play the fair game. I'm an Indian myself and i have been closely associated with people openly doing malpractices

That is true to a larger extent at cisco too ! At least in the BUs I have worked in. But we all have a choice either suck it up or leave .

I have known new hires who are below average engineers and sucked in the interviews, but we had to hire them because they were recommended by manager/ dir of the same community that op mentioned.

But again favoritism is everywhere and most of us do it.

This thing exists everywhere. One of my managers was a. lady. And she only hired/promoted girls. One of the vietnamese managers only hired asian people. Life isn’t fair man!
