been doing SWE and DS in the security realm for a few years. want to see what being a security engineer would be like. what are the obvious best certifications to get?
If you are chasing money you should move in ML/AI.
Cause we don't like aholes like you in our field
Ok boomer
Oh no. Heaven help me for telling someone that is coming into the field only for the money to find a higher paying job. But if you want serious advice. Assuming you already work in the industry there really aren't any homerun certs. I know plenty of people with top of the line osce certs that barely make 130-140k. I don't know enough gse's to opine on their salaries but my guess is that they probably earn more but aren't hitting home runs. If you want to the make the most money you are going to have to get some cloud certs and then match that with security skills from the classes / certs from the Sans institute. Either way the big money in security doesn't come from a cert. It comes from being an architect, that can solve really hard cloud and on prem problems for all types of companies
None.
Why
I’m a security engineer and no one gives a damn. How well you do on an interview is all that matters. Maybe some companies screen for certs like CISSP but those aren’t usually the companies I want to work at (like EY or KPMG). With that said, I don’t think certifications hurt your chances either assuming it is something in-demand like AWS security or something in the ML space.
CISSP is a catch all. SANS certs are great for blue teamers and defenders. OSCP/OSCE for pen testers and red teamers. DM me for details if you have questions. Source: me.
when i get out of school, im getting the oscp, i want to do physical pentesting
Physical pentesting doesnt really need certs afaik...
Certs aren't particularly useful for appsec or seceng style roles. Moreso for the IT side of security.
A better place to search and connect with security community is Twitter. Much of your answer is going to depend on what security role you want.
