startups success and failure

How does folks decide if the start ups are worth joining? What particularly you ask during the interview to gauge if the start ups worth joining other than considering their ambitions and grand marketing ? Do you think the unicorn start up generating not a single penny is red flag? If not, what else to look for? I am considering joining a agriculture start up but unsure about their future. Any tips or suggestions greatly appreciated. TC 140k

If it is not funded by Softbank, it might be successful.

- Have the founders exited successfully another company? - Related to the above ^: does the management team members have any experience at all? Or are basically new grads that founded a company? - What is the hiring process in general? Heavily based on friendship only or more leaning towards technical referrals? - Does it have revenue? If not, when? (The answer of this question is very important depending on the rounding fund the company is)

Thanks for your input. Management and executive are from previous pharmaceutical, biotech, tech industries who were entrepreneurs and or sold their companies with big bucks. The hiring process was pretty generic. I should say LC medium/easy type of questions. They project the positive cash flow next year. But as of today $0. Their funding is good , > $500M in 4 years.

Worst case scenario they go under and you get another job. Odds are you quit before that even happens

I suggest dropping the overused and meaningless "unicorn" label in your evaluation as it provides false confidence. Since you are joining a startup, you have to get a clear understanding of your fit. In general, you learn new things quickly at a startup. However, it is up to you to make sure that the new skills that you pick up are portable - that you will be able to reapply/reuse these in your next role. I don't know Agri sector very well and don't know how the conflict between regulators and innovators gets addressed.
