hello Blind community, I was hoping for some advice from the professionals on this thread. I’m a senior graduating in December with a degree in math & minor in CS. I have no relevant internships and only a couple of projects. The only thing I really have going for me is a 3.9 gpa and most tech companies don’t care about that. I’m gearing up to apply to faang + 🦄 companies in the Fall but really need an internship this summer to legitimize my position as a potential software engineer & boost my chances at getting interviews from those top companies. I’ve applied to over 200 internships for the summer and haven’t heard back from anyone except 1 or 2. At this point, I’d gladly do an unpaid internship, as I know just being in that environment around senior engineers and absorbing as much knowledge from them as possible would do wonders for launching my career. I would live in the office if given a chance from someone, and know my work ethic and desire to learn could add value to a company I just don’t know what to do as the summer has practically began and I still have nothing. Would really appreciate some advice, regardless of whether it is brutal or not Really appreciate your time
Have you done some personal projects? Built websites, SPAs, apps, dapps?
Look for full time jobs and take night classes for your last semester. It might have to be a shitty startup or crap small company, but itll get work on ur resume. Your grades will probably drop the last quarter, but they only matter for getting into your first job. After that its all about work experience. I got lucky and got an intership/job while i was still in JC, worked full time all the way through school, graduated with 2.8 GPA, the got into a FAANG by just showing my work history and no one even asked about school
If you cant find any company thatll hire you, then get some smart friends of yours and create a startup. I almost had to do that but got lucky and landed a job. Your startup will almost definitely fail, but that doesn't matter, you need something on your resume
that’s dope man , congrats on your success
Try startups, they don’t pay well, but at lease you have something on your resume. Work for free usually doesn’t work.
Am I right assuming you are from States? If so, then you probably have been looking for internships in US too. Have you considered any European locations? In many European countries the summer break starts later (in July) and I think it's still possible to land an internship there. Your US degree could be an advantage (or a problem when it comes to visas, depends on a country). Good luck, at the end on the day you only need one offer, not 200.
yessir, born here. That’s a really good idea, I’ll look into it. I’ve been applying to at least 20 a day, I think I’m not getting looks because I don’t have any internships, just 1 full stack project I finished last week using angular and node JS
I've send you a pm
FAANNG - intern at Nvidia :-)
Nvidia is a dope company lol I’d intern there in a heartbeat, but those spots have definitely been filled by now
Maybe your resume is thrash? If your uni career center is bad, find resources to build up your resume from other universities, some have their career center site public.
maybe it is, I thought the layout was pretty nice but who knows I guess it’s garbage lol
This, or you just applied too late. Most opportunities start in September. After December it's too late for a lot of them. I suggest you to apply in Europe, it's still in time for some opportunities. Don't expect to be well paid however.
