got an offer from uber, 450k tc
currently make 400k at netflix all cash + 5% of salary in options on top of it.

option one - join uber, stock price is low, lots of career growth and potential for growth.

option two - show this offer to netflix and get a raise. in the long term netflix will have a hard time but for now its a safe bet.

No trolling please. i really want to know how bad things au uber are. netflix stock just dropped from 400 to 290

i’d appreciate word advice or an explanation from uber folks as well

Can u please also explain why Uber is bad? It’s extra 50k after all and less taxes to pay! All cash is not always that great.

About Uber and all. Netflix will survive in the short term at least.

The difference between 400 and 450 seems small, but that's an extra $2,000+ in your pocket every month.

More like 1000 after taxes but nonetheless.my wife doesn’t work and kids can use some savings for college!

Is your marginal tax rate really 75%?

Oops sorry, it’s late and pay periods are conflated with months in my head. That’s why I am not at google :) 2000 it is, 1k per pay period

Why not do both? Ask Netflix to raise and then decide. I guess you might burn some bridges

Don’t ever ask for a counter unless you’re willing to walk away. You never know what might happen.

Netflix works differently. They actually encourage their employees to interview and get "data points" for compensation adjustments.

Yep. That's exactly what I did. Our philosophy is to pay top of personal market. Often that requires you to demonstrate your personal market.

Do this. Get the offer. Present it and get your comp matches. This is what your manager wants you to do. If you fail the keeper test, then it’s off to Uber. But I would personally stay at Netflix.
      Aug 29
    • Netflix Johnny5
I agree with rAcC67. You will get bumped up to $450k if you are valuable. If you don’t get bumped, you weren’t long for Netflix anyway.

This is the highest 5a offer I’ve ever seen. The stock price is so low right now that you’ll do better than many people from 4 years ago. Amazing upside from here if you believe in the company long term. Also great this is 5a because there’s more room for growth if you perform while this would be a bottom tier offer for 5b, and you would be compared to to other 5bs during reviews. Culture/WLB is fine. Everyone’s experiences are team specific, though. Morale is low because people are concerned about the stock price, but if you’re willing to stomach short term fluctuations and accept that risk, you’ll be fine. Comes down to whether you believe in the industry, like your Uber team, like your potential projects, and are looking for a change. 400k cash at Netflix is a great place to be in still.

      Appreciate a thoughtful advice!
I only got such a high offer because:
      1.luck, interview went well
      2. I was open about my current comp
3.these 9y are on top of PhD, so you can count it into the experience

All offers that haven't been signed are now invalid because of the hiring freeze. I'm guessing the recruiter didn't communicate well.
You can still use it to increase your salary at Netflix as it shows your value

Can confirm. If the offer wasn’t signed, you’ve lost the Uber offer. Uber’s wlb is very very good. You’d never think it based on the public view.

Stock is all time low. If the value doubles in a couple of years your TC will be worth a million. In Netflix, your TC will not fluctuate.

If you believe in the company and are willing to bet on it, then it’s a good opportunity.

Morale is low here because of the news about lay offs and stock price going down day by day. Good talent is interviewing.

I am interviewing with Netflix right now, mind if I DM you?

    • Amazon Oh Hi Mark
If you truly believe that Uber shares will increase then you should buy Uber stocks. You're not willing to then it means you don't believe in them strong enough and you shouldn't expect your TC to increase.

Amazon is correct, partially, because you are granted a large number of shares *today* that don’t require you to pay cash for. It’s like buying stock options without paying for the contract.

You really want to deal with Uber’s culture? I’d seriously consider the downsides of leaving Netflix’s open culture, freedom & responsibility, etc for a 50K raise. Plus we’re about to go into comp review so you are most likely going to get 450K or close to it anyway

  • Don’t join Uber. They close everyone on equity and growth opportunities. I’d stay clear of this place until mid-2020. Let everything settle down before joining.

Uber Eats is still in full force. They have frontend, backend, full stack and mobile. Other teams in limbo until November ER.

Uber is a short career path. Lots of political fights internally. Look at attrition rate at Uber vs Netflix. That’s for a reason. Uber stock is not likely to get any better, at least in a 1-2yr horizon

If you're title focused and want to hang your hat on that on your resume go for Uber. Ultimately, pick the manager, team, project(s) and mission that excites your most with a company you believe in. Judging by your post and comments looks like Uber.

Netflix salary growth is pretty aggressive due to rising market values and improving your skills due to projects you work on. For me personally I doubled my salary in 5 years to be near $500k now.

You won’t get access to the equity until you’ve passed the one year mark. So if you consider Uber you’ll have to cinch the waistline during that year if you’re used to the paycheck that Netflix brings in.
