Biggest difference is that weird terminal you are forced to do everything on

You'll get to learn a bunch of skills and technologies that only Bloomberg uses. You'll feel like a newborn baby when you leave.

You mean C++, python, SQL?

That is changing though. Terminal is pretty good. It has great functionalities and bBG is now using open source technologies so that is a good sign

You’ll learn how things were done 20 years ago.

Not true. Depends on the team. Some teams are up to date on their tech.

Yep true

Bloomberg is a collection of 100s of completely independent (often linked by data or technology but more often completely independent) businesses. Most have own strategy and business. I cannot think of a company that has such a diverse pallette of opportunities. News, Government, Law, Finance (million of flavors), Economics, Messaging ... Data Feeds, Infrastructure (message queues, relational databases, big data tech, UI sdks, Charting), infrastructure in terms of machines and networks.... List goes on and on and on ... Teams are typically small which translates into noone will think for you - you will be in charge and you will wear hats - and you will be accountable ... But again sky is the limit on what you can work on from a business perspective plus all popular tech is available in Bloomberg matter of choosing the team and the team wanting you )))

Do you have tips for preparing for onsite? Ive solved 50 bbg tagged questions... any help much appreciated..

Nothing out of this world ...a very typical interview. Solving given problems in 90% of the success. The rest 5 is how you communicate + 5 not how not to raise any red flags ... E.g. cannot explain in detail you prior experiences or not showing interest in the company..etc. Good luck!

Like any large company, I think it depends on which team you are in. Even within Bloomberg the skills and tech stacks seem to vary a lot across different groups and teams. Saying that folks from Bloomberg are not employable is silly because at all levels people seem to be leaving Bloomberg to go to google, Amazon & Facebook in the NYC area. Similarly Bloomberg is hiring from these companies as well. I have definitely seen a lot of lifers at Bloomberg and the stats show that attrition is lower there than most tech companies. This might be partly due to the Bloomberg terminal ecosystem which takes a while to ramp up on and possibly has many specialized roles that will just be a SWE elsewhere.
