I dont have a college degree, I bartended and worked in customer service for years. I recently became a Sales Development rep and so far I hate it and am not good at it. Ive thought about customer success or manual QA but not sure I have enough experience - any suggestions would be super appreciated!
Get a degree now, unless you’re too old, like in 30s
Learn a programming language, python is the easiest to get started with. There are tonnes of free courses available online. If you don't like programming, then pick up a skill like fluency with a software tool that's in high demand. Skill to work with a low code solution tool are in high demand and will pay well.
I did try to go to school for coding a few years ago but got overwhelmed/lost steam. Python was great though! Maybe I should try again. Can you explain the last part of your comment: “ If you don't like programming, then pick up a skill like fluency with a software tool that's in high demand. Skill to work with a low code solution tool are in high demand and will pay well.” ?
Low code tools require you to have a basic knowledge of coding and are designed to so the heavy lifting for you. Business intelligence tools are a good example, search for tools like tableau, Microsoft flow, power BI, Alteryx etc. If you learn these tools, you can apply for business intelligence jobs. You will find free courses to learn these tools on each of their websites.
This depends so much on ur life situation, it’s hard to answer
Well I’m 33/ single mother. I loved working in customer service and was great at it but don’t want to get paid hourly/30k forever so am looking for ways to uplevel this.
I knew a single mother getting a degree after 30. She’s now making low 100k, managing a team etc. not in tech. So you should consider this path too.
Customer Success perhaps?
That’s what I mentioned being interested in but not sure how to break in
Oops 🤦🏻♂️ Assuming you’re applying to the roles already, I’d start by looking for professional groups in the area you want to work in and beginning to network. Also reaching out to people on LinkedIn with jobs that sound interesting and taking them to coffee to pick their brain.
I'm in my 30's and going back to school. IT/CS and I'm enjoying it. It's harder for me than when I initially did EMS/fire fighting because it's easier to learn new things at a younger age but I'm enjoying it. But it also helps that my wife makes decent money so my $29k DevOps internship isn't the only things supporting us. You may want to look at an associates in computer science at a near by junior college that has online courses. That could help lead to a paid internship that would convert to a full time career. I currently do change requests and deployment in a DevOps team for a major us airline. It's not exciting work but about every six months we have the opportunity to be moved to a new project, depending on the certifications we earn. So I'm working towards earning aws cloud architecture certificates because the career path pays well. I hope it helps you to hear about my experience. The etrade person saying that going back in your 30's, is too old to do so, is bullshit
Become a certified Salesforce administrator
I’m gonna look into this - thanks!! I thought about looking in to scrum master as well but not sure if just getting certified for these things is enough?
