Get one promo and move.

Getting one promo does help to move another level? Or is it just for learning curve?

Google poogers Sep 9, 2019

Getting promo will make it easier to switch companies without being down-levelled. If you leave before promo you're going to effectively reset your progress toward next level, even if your comp doesn't immediately take a hit. Of course some companies (Google) are still going to down-level you unless you have > 3 yoe or are a leetcode god.

You should move when you feel you're not growing anymore or if you've lost interest in the projects and wanna switch to a different org. 4 months is too soon to be thinking about moving 🙄

Are you a PhD student? Is 196k normal for a fresh grad in East coast?

In NYC you should really be looking at finance esp with ML experience. There are a lot of hedge funds that will pay that much.

As far as i know, quant is the greatest bet to get paid well but heard is extremly limited lol.. ctci +heard on the street thing?

I mean these days engineering skills are more in demand, but you can do "data science" at a hedge fund (usually this is curating and onboarding alternative datasets, I think) and be paid pretty well. Core infrastructure engineers are paid really great in hedge funds and prop shops these days despite no PnL.
