Keep a lot of spacing between lines, such that if you want to add something later, you can insert it between lines.
And bring your own thin whiteboard marker
Keep a plain text mapping of shorthand variable names : what youd actually name them in the top right/left corner. Shows how you like to name things, but avoids having to write potentially long var names over and over again

For recursion when testing the code use a stack of blocks, in each block keep track of the variables, and treat the blocks as the loops in the recursive function. This way your keeping track of the state of each recursive loop. Push a block on for each recursive call, and pop when that call terminates.
