Peak IB > Peak SWE
Once you're at the MD level at a bulge bracket or a top boutique, you're likely to be making more on average than a FANG director, but your comp is much more volatile because it mostly depends on how many deals you close.
On an hourly basis? SWEs by far
And IB is not the end of the world. Many people move on to PE and hedge funds, where the upside is potentially higher
IB is shit - it’s not until you move on to pe or hedge that you make good money
Exactly, the buy side is where people go to actually make money. IB is how they try to get a foot in the door.
That being said, an SWE's advantage is the ability to build their own thing and start a company. Much harder to differentiate yourself in finance this way.
And the minimum hours are lower
Not sure where people above are getting their data from. I have friends at top firms (GS, JPM) and make crazy money. The tradeoff is wlb - normal hours for them range from 70-90 hours a week, it’s insane and not worth it imo. A lot of them have mentioned that they want to quit as soon as they make enough and go into private equity. The thing about SWE is that you start off making decent money straight out of undergrad, and wlb is a lot better (yes, even 50-60 work weeks are better than the 90 hour weeks). Potential to make bank in tech isn’t common at all, whether it’s getting lucky by joining the right startup or being a rockstar engineer at a big company
How much are your friends making?
Was a vp at Morgan stanley making $300. Swe with 7 years is making over $450
VP of IT doesn't count
Lol there’s no way you mean VP in the investment banking group unless your benchmark was from a long time ago
absolute: ib hourly: swe
Long term definitely investment bankers (as long as you work hard you’re going to make at least VP/Director which gets you 1m+). Short term, SWEs no question.
How many year until IB hit that 1 million mark?
First, how many VP positions are there compared to the number of investment bankers? You should be comparing the average career income of an IB against that of a SWE. Not cherry picking the very best from both groups and comparing them.
