Who Really Runs Google? We Surveyed Their Employees to Find Out

In 2015 Sundar Pichai took over as CEO of Google, when the company decided to rebrand itself as Alphabet. Reports indicate that today, Larry Page and Sergey Brin, the CEO and president of Alphabet have most of the decision-making power over financial information about every Alphabet company, while Sundar Pichai runs the day-to-day business for Google, receiving weekly and quarterly reports that neither of the co-founders Page and Brin gets reported on.

We wanted to know what employees currently working at Google think about the power dynamics of the leading tech giant.

We asked users to answer one simple question: Who’s in charge at Google today — CEO Sundar Pichai or the company’s co-founders Larry Page and Sergey Brin?  Participants could answer with ‘Sundar Pichai’ or ‘Larry Page and Sergey Brin’ and a total of 7,844 tech employees answered the survey and a total of 691 Google employees answered the survey.

Here’s what we found:

  • 58.86% of Google employees answered with ‘Sundar Pichai’, while 41.14% answered with ‘Larry Page and Sergey Brin’
  • 51.07% of tech employees answered with ‘Sundar Pichai’, while 48.93% answered with ‘Larry Page and Sergey Brin’
