Blind Polls: Zoom Fatigue

Zoom calls are draining a professional’s brain power. On Blind, an anonymous professional network, with 3.6M verified users, an engineer at VM Ware ran a poll asking, “How engaged are you in most work meetings?

The poll had 4,666 responses and robust dialogue with 6,123 professionals commenting on their own experiences, here are some key learnings:

I’m literally in a meeting right now

  • Only 20% of professionals say they are actively listening and providing live feedback
    • 27% of professionals say they are doing other stuff, and simply  listening for their name
    • Only 10% of Intel Corporation professionals claim they are actively listening and providing live feedback
    • eBay has the most engaged work calls (33% claim to be actively listening)
  • 27% of professionals say they are trying to pay attention, but often zoning out.
    • 1/3 of Amazon employees claim to be often zoned out in meetings
    • 54% of Capital One employees claim to be often zoned out in meetings

A user at Amazon responded to the poll saying, “It’s sometimes hard to focus. To help myself I am enabling my cam and also projecting my cam on my monitor. It’s helping me to focus on useless discussions as well.” Another Facebook employee joked they’re playing PS4 while on calls.

As work from home has no end in sight, how can organizations prevent zoom burn out and increase employee engagement?
