Tech Salaries in Austin: The Companies Paying $142,000 or More

Some of Austin’s most highly paid professionals are software engineers and technical program managers, whose pay can be $325,000 or more a year, including the generous stock packages many earn, according to analysis from Blind.

Blind, the anonymous professional social network, analyzed the job offers posted on its platform in the first week of October 2021. More than 5 million verified professionals use Blind to compare job offers, seek professional advice, and gain other workplace insights.

Here are the top nine compensation packages for tech workers in Austin, Texas, in the last week:

1. Wayfair: $325,085 a year

Members of Wayfair’s technical program management team can earn a whopping $325,000 a year.

The offer for an associate director at the online furniture and home goods retailer, posted on Oct. 3, 2021, includes:

  • Base salary: $170,000
  • Bonus: $34,000 (20% bonus of base salary)
  • Stock: $121,085

The Blind user also reported receiving a sign-on bonus of $25,000 for joining the company after negotiating the initial offer.

2. Stripe: $286,500 a year

Stripe, the digital payments company, made news headlines earlier this year after raising $600 million in new capital at a $95 billion valuation. The fundraise makes it one of the most valuable privately-held companies in the world, and it appears the financial-technology company has used the money to pay increasingly high salaries for top talent.

The offer for an Austin-based remote software engineer at the payments processor, posted on Oct. 5, 2021, includes:

  • Base salary: $155,000
  • Bonus: $15,500 (10% bonus of base salary)
  • Stock: $116,000

The Blind user also expects to receive a sign-on bonus of $28,600.

3. Google: $273,000 a year

Workers in Google’s downtown Austin office can earn $273,000 a year on the Google Cloud Platform team.

The offer for a strategy and operations role at the search giant, posted on Oct. 6, 2021, includes:

  • Base salary: $170,000
  • Bonus: $34,000 (20% bonus of base salary)
  • Stock: $69,000 ($276,000 over four years)

The Blind user expects their first and second year’s total compensation at Google to be $295,000, including add-ons, such as a sign-on bonus.

4. Apple: $242,500 a year

Apple, which expects to open its new $1-billion campus in north Austin next year, will pay some of its many software engineers as much as $242,500 a year.

The offer for the Austin-based software developer at the world’s largest technology company, posted on Oct. 4, 2021, includes:

  • Base salary: $175,000
  • Stock: $67,500 ($270,000 over four years)

Apple will also pay the Blind user, who earned a “level 4” offer for the information and communications technology team, a sign-on bonus of $20,000.

5. Apple: $200,000 a year

The offer for an Austin-based Apple software engineer, posted on Oct. 6, 2021, includes:

  • Base salary: $155,000
  • Stock: $45,000 ($180,000 over four years)

The Blind user, who earned a “level 3” offer for the information and communications technology team, also expects to receive a sign-on bonus of $30,000.

6. PayPal: $200,000 a year

Software engineers at PayPal’s West Parmer Lane campus in Austin can earn $200,000 a year.

According to an Oct. 3, 2021, post, a software engineer with seven years of experience and a master’s degree received a “level 25” offer as a member of technical staff, which includes:

  • Base salary: $140,000
  • Stock: $60,000

7. VMware: $180,270 a year

Senior developers at VMware’s River Place Centre campus can earn more than $180,000 a year on the hybrid cloud platform business unit.

The offer for a senior software engineer, posted on Oct. 8, 2021, includes:

  • Base salary: $146,000
  • Bonus: $17,520 (12% bonus of base salary)
  • Stock: $16,750 ($67,000 over four years)

The Blind user, who received a “level 3” offer as a member of technical staff, will also receive a sign-on bonus of $40,000 over two years.

8. Amazon: $158,000 a year

Junior software development engineers at the Internet conglomerate Amazon can earn $158,000 a year in Austin.

The offer for a “level 4” or entry-level coder, posted on Oct. 4, 2021, includes:

  • Base salary: $137,000
  • Stock: $21,000

Amazon will also pay the Blind user a sign-on bonus of $40,000, according to the “rate my offer” post.

9. Amazon: $142,000 a year

Amazon offered another new-grad software engineer a lower salary but a bit more stock. The offer for the entry-level role, posted on Oct. 2, 2021, includes:

  • Base salary: $120,000
  • Stock: $22,000

The Blind user expects a $60,000 sign-on bonus over two years: $37,000 in the first year and $23,000 in the next year. The e-commerce giant also offered the new-grad coder $7,000 to relocate to Austin.

Blind analyzed job offers and the total compensation of software engineers and other technology professionals in Austin, Texas, from Oct. 2 to 8, 2021. Job offers were ranked by annual base salary, annual bonus, and the value of any stock or other equity packages after one year.
