- Payroll is a cool product space. It feels good to work on things that help employees of small businesses get their paychecks on time - Gusto cares about DE&I and has tons of guest speakers, policies and thoughtful practices to support it - Very flexible workplace with good work life balance in terms of total hours - Certain teams recognize the issues below and work hard to shield themselves from toxicity
- Leaders reward heroism and run-fast-break-things development, and don't fund teams to do the hard un-sexy work of improving the quality of our systems, then raise fire alarms and point fingers when things break with helpful memos such as "engineers must test their code", as if that were the issue - Environment is low trust. Eng leaders do not practice blameless postmortem culture. They try to throw the hot potato to say it's somebody else's fault if something went wrong, rather than working together to get to the bottom of things - Culture is very defensive of tenure. People shut down newcomers who point out inconsistencies or question the way things are done. Those with tenure are coddled and allowed to be the loudest voice in the room while newcomers are told to keep themselves in check when disagreeing, to avoid upsetting the tenured engineers so they don't leave - All the above creates a high stress environment despite solid work-life balance on paper. Especially for high performers who are trying to do solid engineering and be part of improving the systems they work in.

This is what growth at all costs looks like. Deel is a sh1tsh0w for accepting these clients when their whole value prop is compliance.
