Jackson is a small/medium firm. There is a lot of opportunity for growth in some departments like actuarial, finance, and IT. The pay is pretty close to National median for most roles, despite being located in Lansing, MI which is a very low cost of living city. In Finance and IT bonuses are large compared to other firms. Employee benefits are also very good. 401k match is above the national average. There is profit sharing. And health benefits are PPO with very minimal cost sharing on your part. The staff are also very friendly, and if you enjoy going into the office and such there is a lot of camaraderie. People stick around a while which also helps.
The insurance operations side of the business is run like an old-school factory; people are overworked and underpaid. The most recent management regime mostly comes from this culture, so there’s been a big push towards micromanagement of employees in other areas of the business. Big example of this, in IT and Actuarial you could previously get arrangements to work remotely if you worked with your direct management chain. Now it is mandatory 5 days in office for all who are not mid-level analysts, and they will track your badge and IP address to ensure you’re coming in. You will have to relocate to Lansing, MI to work here. The current CEO also does nothing for company team building. She stopped all holiday parties/ social events and limited capacity for having team building exercises across the entire org, all while touting the message that we work better together in-person. Maybe give it a few years before applying here when new management is finally put into place. It used to be fantastic under the previous three CEOs. Financial companies should be led by financial professionals, not factory managers.

A friend is moving to Jackson, Mississippi. From the looks of it appears to be a cheap state. How's the market there? Does it make sense to buy a house there? Any areas where it's easier to rent once they move out from the State? #housing #mississippi #move
