Decent work life balance, and some good engineers are still there.
After several acquisitions, the heart and soul of the company has left for better things. Those that remain are in privileged positions, are complacent, or are not competitive. Compensation and benefits are generally poor for the Boston area. The health insurance, in particular, is shitty and will leave you frustrated if you ever seek care. Management and leadership try to keep the illusion that the place isn't a stagnating place to work. With few fresh minds in leadership poor practices are double downed on. The management and subsequently the culture is very segregated, you have the older cohort that maintains its power and position, and new people. New people are rarely in a place to move into the established cohort as they are all pals with each other. What is left is poor in company progression that is artificially slowed with title inflation. People that are at all ambitious leave realizing this. The tech skills gained are often very Athena specific and minimally transferrable. There is some effort to address this, but only a handful of teams get to work with anything newer in a way that matters. There are much better options out there.
