- Barrier to entry is extremely low - great for 0YOE and college grads. Lots of internal training programs, and friendly supportive corporate culture for juniors. Free access to Microsoft trainings/certifications. - Depending on project, you can get fantastic WLB - some projects you can coast for months at a time attending meetings and writing <10 lines of code per week. Extremely rare to get 35-40 hour workloads. - Corporate culture is (depending on region) excellent and it's very easy (compared to other consulting firms) to switch projects, switch teams, switch roles, etc. You can quickly and painlessly swap tracks to infra, BA/TPM, cybersecurity, etc. with the right politicking. - As a consulting company, good employee diversity compared to cutting edge tech firms. Pre-covid there was a very active social scene in the big hubs (Seattle, Chicago, etc.). Friendly and wide range of people compared to engineer-dominated workplaces. Lots of parties, happy hours, free meals, etc. - Due to being a consulting firm, you can get an extremely diverse learning experience very quickly if you get on the right projects. Opportunities range from garden variety .NET (their bread and butter) to more modern apps with Angular and React/Node. Ever-increasing projects with great AWS/Azure learning opportunities. - Overall I would highly recommend Avanade over WITCH/Accenture/Deloitte/KPMG/PWC and comparable to EY/Slalom especially for an entry level gig especially for non-CS majors and non-college degree holders. Worst case scenario if you're in that demo is you stick it out for a year or two and hop with some actual industry experience under your belt.
- Pay is the biggest downside. Expect 10-20% less than median local SDE TC at each level. Can't get above ~150k as SDE unless you go into managerial roles. - Staffing is a gamble and career advancement is extremely political. You are measured based on the perception of your output and project outcomes, not technical ability. Promotions require really selling your achievements to HR/managers that have never met you and no idea of the quality of your work. Those who are connected and charismatic and get on the right projects will rise quickly while the technical people who just deliver tend to get left in the dust. Useless certifications are highly pushed and big focus on chargeability and other metrics that don't actually reflect developer quality. - Projects/work experience is extremely diverse which can be a downside. You can get stuck maintaining 20+ year old legacy .NET apps or worse, doing something like PowerApps/Sharepoint/Dynamics365 that's not even development. With bad luck you can waste a lot of time learning zero transferable skills. - Dealing with clients can be a big pain. As a consulting firm a lot of roles are heavily customer-facing and you will occasionally be expected to sell or worse, recover when projects derail. On the other hand, this could be a positive as it really reinforces your soft skills. - Overall I would not recommend Avanade if you're chasing TC and/or have decent YOE. The pay is too low and career advancement is a mixed bag unless you're specifically looking to transition into management.
