“Great idea, great people, poor execution, awful leadership”
ProsThe people at the bottom of the org chart were great. It’s hard to tell who is what anymore. The product was a great idea in its day and could be something more if directed properly. They are trying to rally the industry around a new concept (Collective Defense) and obviously want to the gold standard for it, but it’s not working quickly enough and there is evidence that they will quickly (more quickly than anticipated) have competition.
I liked a lot of the people I came into contact with, most of whom are elsewhere now and have formed a pretty good group who have been helping each other with job leads, etc.
ConsLeadership is awful. The company is incredibly top heavy and has effectively been nothing more than a golden parachute for a bunch of former senior government officials who knew nothing about commercial products/markets and are living large on the backs of investors while simultaneously sinking the stock price, and destroying the equity of the staff who followed them and/or bought into the vision.
In March/April 2020, at the beginning of COVID, the new co-CEO announced (and I quote) “No one will terminated for any reason, including for cause, while the pandemic is still a crisis”. In June, 2020, they laid off 20% of the company. The lies were obvious and egregious. Meanwhile, the Product Management organization was led by an old guard/style CPO and an incompetent VP of Product Management.
In the beginning, the original leadership team treated the company like separate government agencies and fought amongst each other to decide who and which team would lead the company into the future.
The original founder who had literally everyone’s respect and admiration, effectively sold out everyone who followed him and jumped down the rabbit hole, managed to avoid the stock lockout period and sold a cool couple of million dollars worth JUST before the price tanked. Now those at the bottom of the org chart are about to come up on the end of the lockout period and have watched a SUBSTANTIAL amount of their equity go up in flames. The company continues to miss earnings, lower their guidance and they make token changes to try and compensate rather than face the obvious conclusion….They don’t know what they’re doing, and deserve to be terminated for their failure to lead and reshape the company.
As for the product, they built a massive network detection appliance and have yet to face the reality that most companies don’t want to work that way anymore, and most cybersecurity products are focusing on smaller foot prints, and different methodologies.
Reasons for ResignationI was part of the 20% that was let go. It was basically a Bloody Thursday…you’d find a random and cryptic Zoom invite on your calendar and they’d tell you how hard and difficult this is for them. It was a great severance package though!
