“Superior technology, chill people”
ProsYou get to work with cool lidar technology for self driving cars and robots, with none of the annoying hard parts of self driving that plague the rest of the autonomous vehicle industry.
* VCSEL and SPAD technology is superior in the long run. The existing products are already superior in terms of form factor and price. If VCSEL and SPAD technology improves at the current rate, Ouster should be able to crush the competition with even lower prices.
* Most employees are smart and friendly.
* Good benefits with 401k, medical/dental insurance, etc.
* Work from home during COVID, but even before, there was a work from home day once per week for the software team.
* The software team has a most noble cause of saving lives with lidar.
* Excellent documentation for algorithms and mathematical derivations.
* State of the art algorithms for SLAM and point cloud registration.
* Flexible hours.
* Less stress for the software team to make money since the hardware business is bringing in the cash for the time being.
Cons* Despite better performance and reliability, spinning lidars are not fashionable in the eyes of journalists and "technology enthusiasts".
* Founders and early employees work extremely hard with very long hours and may inadvertently set an example for a high-stress culture.
* Software team is only a relatively small part of the company, about 1/8 of the whole company.
