“The Social Security Administration is one of the worst federal agencies to work for!”

Verified User Current Employee · n***** · Disputes and Claims Specialist - Apr 26, 2022

ProsThe pay, which is 23% lower than the same job in the private sector.
The benefits, which you'll need every one of them to cope with the Cons of this job.

ConsAlmost 15 years ago, I was honored to be a public servant and work for the Social Security Administration. With every person that I helped, I knew that I was making a difference. We were understaffed, but were assured that funding would be approved soon for more staffing. Every year the work increased but we never hired enough staff to replace our losses. Today we have 8% LESS staff than we did almost 15 years ago and we have 27% MORE people receiving benefits. We don't have enough staff to do the work, answer the phones, or meet the needs of the public.

In response, the leaders of the Social Security Administration blamed federal employees, burnt out their top talent, increased the work, and severely micromanaged. The Agency insisted on using out of date and untested technology and refused to automate our programs to make it easier to do more work with less staff. Employees have proven countless times that they are significantly more efficient when they telework and happier when a work/life balance is provided. In response, telework was severely limited, managers were encouraged to cancel telework, and micromanaging increased again. In comparison, all Agency leaders telework full time and never deal with the public.

The public takes out their frustrations with their political leaders on the employees. Employees are harassed, threatened, regularly screamed at, stalked, and more. Employees are required to never react to these attacks and immediately start the next verbally abusive interview where they are simply upholding a law passed by Congress.

Some offices have incredible, supportive managers who are forced to implement workflows and expectations they know will never be met. Offices with bad managers harass employees, play favorites, and set employees up for failure knowing they'll either cower or quit. Employees from different races, religions, genders, sexual orientation, or with disabilities are targeted by bad managers and bad leaders. When the employees file a complaint, they are labeled as troublemakers, their careers are blackballed, and the discriminating managers are never fired.

Because of all of these factors, most employees are stressed out, frustrated, and exhausted. The Social Security Administration went from one of the best agencies to work for to one of the worst. The benefits sound amazing, but the extremely stressful environment takes a severe toll on employees and their families. Sadly, the Social Security Administration gets worse every year especially when you consider the biyearly threat of a furlough. (Where you are required to work but you don't know when you'll get paid.) I wish I'd never taken this job.
