Pros+ When in-person, culture is collaborative and fun. In-office perks like snacks and movie nights
+ Coworkers are brilliant
+ Freedom (to an extent) to choose an interesting project
+ People are rarely fired, instead management tries to find a better fit for individuals if performance is poor (on the flip side, it also means that you often have someone dragging your team progress down)
Cons+ Management is out of touch with employees. They claim to be transparent, but are very aloof and secretive, and either don’t know or don’t care about mounting employee frustration.
+ Management are mostly engineers who got promoted to management. As such, they don’t have the best management skills, and there aren’t solid processes/prioritization. Related to all management being engineers- they value technical skills above all else, so people in project management, language specialists, etc are not valued. Because those positions aren’t valued, we don’t hire for them, and so there end up being too few people trying to manage the work of too many, all while engineers waste time on projects that aren’t very useful to the company because there is no real management/guidance.
+ Priorities simply don’t exist. Every client and every project is “high priority.” Staff is stretched thin trying to meet unrealistic deadlines for too many projects. Because of this, the culture is becoming less and less collaborative, since people have too many tasks to help others.
+ Benefits are subpar - no 401k matching, no bonuses, salaries are not competitive with similar tech companies. We used to have holiday and summer parties, but management has taken advantage of covid to take those away without a replacement. There’s little acknowledgement of the hours and effort that people put into the company-most people get similar raises regardless of whether they go above and beyond or whether they coast.
