“If you're looking for old-school, look no further.”
Pros- Decent pay and health benefits (although I was initially highballed and then given a much much lower salary, but that could be my own fault for being fresh out of college and not aggressive).
- Not very stressful most of the time.
- Good amount of nice people.
Cons- Incompetent offshore IT (the "Windows System Admin" had never heard of "Linux").
- Cross team collaboration essentially nonexistent. The business teams barely work with the global teams who don't really work with the data teams... etc.
- No focus on individual career growth. I asked for multiple opportunities to learn and get mentorship but everything was either denied or I was told it would be "provided in the future". (By the way, have fun with performance reviews. It's a nonsensical system that gives no way for you to argue for a raise or proper bonus, and a SINGLE POINT docked could mean you get nothing at all at the end of the year)
- There's no need for data science here. There's not even proper databases for most teams, and the data architecture teams shut down any external ideas and requests. Any data science related projects (not even just machine learning, but anything related to optimization, cloud infrastructure, new visualizations) get shut down after you work on them for a while.
- No proper coding practices. Non-tech teams don't have repositories nor databases.
- Unreasonable and ill defined expectations. Constant scope creep and arguments for not having things accomplished that were never discussed. Management comes up with project ideas on their own and tell you to deliver to their specifications, no actual "figuring out" on your own besides how to make their vision come true.
Unless you're looking for a dead end or just a chill job where you don't need to do or learn much but get a nice paycheck, I recommend looking elsewhere.
