“Spit out the Kool-Aid.”
Pros- good mental health benefits.
- enticing perks
- remote environment, if you're into that
- coworkers really care about each other for the most part
Cons- handled covid like a bunch of sociopaths. as we all know, thumbtack very hastily and unapologetically laid off 1/3 of their workforce at the on-sight of covid. i lost many friends, we lost our dei leadership team, layoffs were made indiscriminately and without explanation. teams of 20 became 2 people, unrelated teams got combined due to lack of available resources, and we all tripled our workload. the problem with this is that we're still operating on a desperation mentality over a year later.
- dei efforts are ALL TALK. marginalized identities are PAID LESS. CONSISTENTLY. our dei team was the first to get the axe during the layoff. thumbtack scrambled to show just how into inclusion they are when George Floyd was murdered. 'heartfelt' emails full of white tears from leadership were sent out to the masses, thumbtack doesn't stand for discrimination or police brutality, etc. they quickly hired a new dei director, and they're great. the problem is, thumbtack talks so much about how important dei is to them, but they expect marginalized identities to build and strengthen their employee resource groups, and they do not pay them for their work. this creates a disparity where, if marginalized groups want visibility, representation, and a voice, they must work to create it FOR FREE, on their own time.
it doesn't get much more performative than a white dude sending an email about how sad he is about George Floyd while scrambling up the backs of the marginalized and expecting them to make him (and thumbtack) look good without getting paid for it.
- you will be overworked. people that survived the covid layoffs have had no chance to thrive. i saw a review on glassdoor that said that the answer to every plea for added resources was met with 'i hear you.' 100% accurate. i have spent the past year barely getting by, incredibly overworked, unable to do anything after i'm *finally* able to log off of my computer except go to bed and dread the morning when i'd have to log back on.
- you will not be valued. i have given my life to this company for the past few years. literally my life after we went remote because you are expected not to miss anything and it almost feels like we're not supposed to ever log out of slack. they take and take until you're all used up, without much more than a pat on the back. i give everything to set this company up for success, and they just keep chewing me up and spitting me out
- money sure does talk. i won't say everyone is underpaid, but i definitely am. i don't really want to give any details that would reveal my identity, so i can't really say how i found out just how underpaid i am. it isn't due to certifications/tenure/experience. manager told me i made less than half the max payout for my position, and later i was told how much other positions that orbit mine make...and everyone makes about 10k more than i do. including entry positions.
- incredibly difficult to advance in your career. i have been put in a tiny, exhausting box for the past two years. i have expressed interest in doing more, getting more knowledge, trying new things. i have gone out of my way to build my own expertise. i keep hearing 'it's coming! soon!' when i ask about getting new/different responsibilities... spoiler alert... it's not
