“Lack of Transparency, Benefits, and Overall weird vibes. ”
Pros- Millions of daily users means you get to see how scalable software works (or how it should a lot of the times).
- Some interesting problems to solve (not a ton honestly).
- In general, most people are pleasant people and good developers.
- Not the worst pay but far from the best.
- Time to learn on the job.
- Work life balance is there but only if you make sure of it. There are routinely people who work far, far too much and on weekends, which creates a snowball effect of burnout.
- Some opportunities to advance but the tracks are limited and not all that attractive.
- You get to work on some novel stuff
- The gift boxes were great last year, but unsure if they will be there this year.
Cons- Lack of Transparency is huge. This company's CEO's, presidents, exec's and other top level management are largely made up of one family. I don't know if the lack of transparency comes from lack of experience (which is possible. A lot of the younger family members have never worked for another company except iFIT), or just not understanding the way to run a modern day company. Actually, when I think of it, that is probably exactly it. Icon Health and Fitness has a very legacy approach to HR, Benefits, and company culture and just changing the name isn't going to fix that.
Information these days is constant and consistent. If you think something won't be leaked, you are wrong. It will. Just own it. Own your truths.
The biggest issue with this lack of Transparency came from when the company wanted to IPO (and pulled back, probably a good move seeing how terrible public at home fitness companies are currently doing). During the lead up to the IPO, iFIT froze wages and hiring. Ok, no worries. Well, once they postponed the IPO, wages and hiring didn't come back. When will it come back? Well the answer was always in the future and the times kept getting further and further out.
We recently found out the company cut all of its contractors, laid off a small number of developers, and a larger number of testers. Merry Christmas to all. I think the timing on this is ridiculous. The writing just seems to be on the walls.
Recently, we had to sit through a meeting with the president ensuring us all that we are a very great company, one of the best companies, we are such great people, this is a family. etc. During the entire meeting the vibe was just terrible. It felt bad, looked bad, sounded bad.
The uncertainty is at an all time high and I know a lot of people will most likely start dropping off. They broke promises and or can't even relay definitive timelines for most things. It took a year of complaining to get decent health insurance.
The company is also very silo'd for a private company. Who are the designers? I don't know. Who are the embedded developers? I don't know. Does anyone know who I am? Probably not.
I never felt like I truly connected with anyone here. It felt like I had to watch myself at all times. I also felt like I shouldn't take vacation because of how many people I'd have to ask just to get it approved. Just very weird policies here.
Terrible benefits. No insurance for 30 days or whatever it is? Like seriously? This is a FITNESS/HEALTH company and you don't offer insurance right away? And then what you do offer is completely terrible. I know it is changing but damn. If you want to be a big company you have to act like one.
Reasons for ResignationMore money, better benefits, more collaboration, more unique challenges.
