The Alabama House Education Policy Committee on Tuesday declined to advance a bill that would have established statewide procedures for due process for K-12 students facing suspensions and expulsions. Sen. Rodger Smitherman, D-Birmingham, introduced Senate Bill 203, which would also require school boards to hold hearings before making disciplinary decisions.

Almost 20 percent of K-12 students in North Carolina aren't attending school four days a week. In local school districts like Chapel Hill-Carrboro City Schools and Orange County Schools, these attendance rates are lower for students of color and students with disabilities.
