Got an offer for both. The TC differs significantly, but cost of living (COL) may offset this. I hear mixed things about Austin's COL and the NYC experience. It's hard for me to get a gauge, so I ask here for more data points.

I'm divorced, so I don't require a big living space, but I'm at the point where I definitely want to afford a really "nice place." Additionally, I'll want to afford a place with an "extra" room I can use for my kids or family when they visit. Likely a townhome or high end apartment/condo right in the middle of some nightlife that I can just safely walk to. NYC would seem ideal here, except for the exorbitant cost. Austin also has an appealing vibe to me, as I'm more a food/music/bar guy than a nightclub person.

Which one will give me the most disposable income, while still netting me that nightlife I'm interested in.

Austin. You can’t afford a “nice place” as you put it in NYC for less than a few million. Screw HCOL, don’t get the human attraction to wanting to be house poor to live crammed in a city with terrible air quality and traffic.

30 miles translates to 30 mins roughly. I don’t think it’s “literally in the middle of nowhere”. Folks sometimes sound so funny trying to make an argument. Living in downtown vs suburbs has pros and cons. It depends on individual preferences.

    • It’s not 30 mins. I bet you. From Norther Austin it takes 40 mins. Fucking it’ll take an hour. I have lived there and I know what talking about. “Nice place” is a personal preference too.

Tbh I think nothing in the US can compare to the NYC nightlife. If that’s super important to you, pick NYC 100% coz Austin is college town/sausage party/Ilonmuskburg with no real class, sophistication, or even variety.

And NYC nightlife is not just clubs lol. It can be whatever you want it to be, from bars and restaurants to galleries, concerts, jams, walks, etc.

I live in NYC and had high hope for Austin as a potential home. I visited there last month to check out, and I hated there.

I think is Austin is severely overestimated. I suggest you to visit both places before you make decision.

Austin if you prefer slow suburban car dependent lifestyle. NYC if you enjoy city life, walking, parks and being outside.

  • Big city vibe, night life, lifestyle…. NYC is unbeatable… plus that TC being mostly single is more than enough to splurge…
