Hello y’all. So I’ve cleared the L4 interview loop at google and got the initial offer:

30L (base) + 15% bonus + $100k stocks front loaded. Total TC: 60L

Yes, it’s a low ball offer (did not expect much from Google these days). So I’m negotiating with my recruiter to get those numbers up.

My current TC at LinkedIn: 26L + 10% bonus + $25k per year (appreciated). Total TC: 47L. YOE: 6.5. 2 years at Li and WITCH before.

Pros at Google:
- Better Brand.
- Better stock refreshers.

Pros at LinkedIn:
- Established rapport.
- Easier to get to staff at Li than become L5 at Google.

What do you think I should do? (Assuming the recruiter refuses to increase the current offer)

Update: in an interesting turn of events, I ended up getting a better offer: 35L base + 15% + $125K stocks. But now, my manager at LinkedIn has mentioned that they would match the Google numbers too. So I’m staying at LinkedIn :)

Thank you for all the good advice, fellow blinders. Adios!

    Interesting turn of events:
    - Google HR calls me and says there won’t be any raises. So I tell her that I’m staying with LinkedIn.
    - Few hours later, she calls back with better numbers: 35L base, $125K stocks (did not see this coming)
    - Setup a meeting with my current manager and told him that I’d be moving to my next play at Google. Surprise surprise, he told me that LinkedIn would match Google’s offer.

So I’m staying at LinkedIn :)

  • Why would you say “Easier to get to staff at Li than become L5 at Google.”?
AFAIK, getting from L4 to L5 in both companies takes 3-4 years on avg in India.

    • I would suggest you to tell recruiter that you are expecting min 75L (If overall salaries are low for UI role in G then maybe expect min 70L). Otherwise you can stay at Li. You said in other thread you can get to Staff in Li in next 1 year. I don’t know your impact/reputation in your org, but I still find it difficult to do in <2 years given that you are just promoted in last cycle.

By next cycle, I meant 2023 annual review and it’d be 2 years by then. I’ve seen one of my current teammates do the same, so I know it’s possible. But I agree that it’s difficult and my stars must align for it.

      Two words: Leetcode and referral.

I had friends at LinkedIn and Google and got referrals with personal recommendations from them.

Practiced LC every day for 6 months to get better at competitive programming. Flopped Google interview the first time, somehow cleared LinkedIn with a bit of luck.

Kept practising LC and now interviews are substantially easier (although I personally think I suck at it and get really nervous before every round).

      Good luck!

Your offer seems ~80% of Market Reference Point. 70% is the low ball. If you still feel you're low balled, enjoy your stay at Li.

Oh wait, are you my recruiter? Coz that’d explain a lot of things here.

I tried to share the facts that I know and responded to your question about B.C and you asked for "What I should do". I feel there was no mean of condense here. Sorry if you feel so.

I'm not a recruiter, EM here. I'm at 90th percentile wrt TC from competition max. I'm good with that. But thanks! I've teams in India as well, hence I know about MRP there, thought it might be useful.
      Signing off!
