I'm starting a new role at Facebook soon and would really like to try working on an infra team. I heard that a lot of the roles are c++ focussed and was wondering if it's hard to pickup if you've never written c++ before, and have limited experience with c. I've used Java extensively and have generally been able to pick up languages pretty quickly but I hear c++ is a different beast.

  • I did it and am doing fine. I had never written c++ outside of school coursework and had only used garbage collected languages professionally.

In preparation for the switch I was leetcoding and doing hacker ranks in c++. I found a tour of c++, the scott meyers books, lippmann’s inside the c++ object model, and the first section of c++ templates the complete guide useful.

To all my friends who say programming language doesn't matter. This right here is an example of why it matters. The senior you become in your career the more people expect out of you. If you don't know the language the rest of the team codes in...your ramp up time becomes significantly higher. Hash this out with your manager and set the expectation. In the meantime , leetcode in cpp

Why not join infra after working a few years on product? Imo joining an infra team from the jump is tricky. You have no idea about the domain. Esp given fb has a bottom up culture with a lot of ownership.. could be tricky
