Which is the main difference? Is AS more code oriented and DS more SQL and analysis?

Applied Scientist is top of the band, even higher than SWE in terms of pay. The role involves a lot of research and production deployment. DS at Amazon is not usually production facing. It's analytics and ML model building depending on the team

Sorry, just to piggyback - For the DS phone screen, what is the best way to prepare for the Python coding questions? Leetcode, pandas data manipulation or both?

AS is slightly more research oriented, and expected to be more focused towards data preparation, modeling and thinking about productiom factors or directly productionizing a model.

DS is more oriented towards working through all steps through the data science lifecycle and less research oriented. Also, I've seen quite a few BIEs who moved into DS role.

Both role definitions are team dependent though. I've interviewed a few teams hiring ASs but the role sounded more like a DS.

    In terms of compensation, AS>DS.

In a nutshell, pay AS > DS but responsibilities AS ~= DS since most AS don’t really work on prod code or do real research.

AS is proxy role for paying high TC to PhD folks . The quality of phd folks at amazon AS is 🀒

It seems like amazon hire any PhD from any shit university with research in even electrical engineering or biomedical engineering

Similar to Pm role being a proxy to pay high pay to non-tech bachelors in English grads or MBA grad

Yes AS is more code oriented research. When things don’t work youre expected to explain it in terms of code. DS are more like explaining the stats to business (non tech) functions.

    (I’m an AS)
