I recently got an offer from VMware as a new grad full-time product designer. I'm currently based in East Coast but since my team is mostly based in Palo Alto, my manager wants me to relocate to the Bay area. I love East Coast and I would much prefer staying here. Is it a common case at VMware (or any other tech companies) for entry level designers to relocate closer to the team or is it okay to ask if I could stay and work remotely? I only ask because if I remember correctly, VMware was one of the first companies to announce permanent WFH. Please help a newbie out.

TC: $180k + relocation

Not mandatory if you are able to work during their hours/time zone. Doesn’t matter what your level is. Did you ask why your manager is asking to relocate?

Thanks for sharing. Yes, I did ask, and my manager said it's for learning opportunity.

Nobody can make you move if you don’t want to and they hired you based in your current location already. Normally pre-covid it’s usually easier for folks to promote people they see more often, including hallway chats, etc. With most folks still remote I have a hard time justifying that but I’d keep an eye out for any politics regarding “exposure” or “face time”.

Btw you don’t have to share but curious what you’re including in your TC? Base offer + full 4 year vesting of RSUs or…?
