In the past 6 months I’ve been interviewing for many DS, ML, SFE positions. Many to their onsite step but couldn’t get any offer. Recently, my small startup company leaders decided to take a different route and focus on selling the company. So they layed me off to save their money! Now, due to some OPT visa complications, I have to get a job by January. Otherwise I have to be unemployed for several months until I get green card work permit (already under process).
I don’t know how bad an unemployment gap will be on my resume. I was thinking about working on personal projects or attending kaggle competition.
Is a gap on resume really bad???!
Anyone has a good recommendation on what I can do to make up for that?
I appreciate any help from the community here for figuring out my options 🙏

Firstly, I would only list years (not months) on my resume so that no such gap is visible.
A second option would be to take on a contracting gig by next week (easy to get) so that you have income and are also employed, which you hunt for a full time job.
The bigger the deal you make about such a “gap”, they more others will care. This is only a gap if you call it one….
