Tech auditor looking for an out

Oct 17, 2020 39 Comments

What are the exit opportunities for a tech auditor? Need to get out of audit as soon as possible. I really don’t want to get stuck here.

Also I’d like to start a family soon so I’m trying to raise my TC significantly (don’t we all)

Location: Dallas
TC: 75k

Former CPA here who also worked for KPMG for sometime.

My exit plan was as follows:

    1. Got CISSP
    2. Found Info Sec position that is not technical
    3. Got CCSP and AWS CSA
    4. Learn Linux and Python as deeply as possible with a lot of hands on practice
    5. Found first tech position with CACi
    6. Just started with Oracle as SRE this week.

Total time took for transitioning: 2 years
My TC more than doubled: from 90 to ~190

You know what, I do remember a time the Accounting majors seemed like elitists because of how in demand the field was over CS. This was right after the dot com bubble and Enron, so compliance was all the corporate rage.

Did you get CISSP associate? because CISSP itself requires info sec experience.

The best way out in my opinion ( esp with 2 yoe )

    1. Join public accounting
    2. Move into tech clients and if possible move to San Jose or Austin
    3. Get 3 years under belt , see if you can get Manager
    4. Meanwhile get CISA, CISSP and progress technically if that’s what you like , else those basic certs should help .
    5. If you really want to ease thru at a average pace , you will most likely get opportunity to join the internal audit of your clients — estimated 150k for no name and if it’s one of big techs 325k TC ( I just had an offer from FB for 385)
    6. If that doesn’t work , then try to get into security compliance and that should have at-least 25% more than internal audit . From there you can slowly append your skills and move into security full fledged and after about 10-15 years there , you can start climbing the ladder to CISO which may or may not happen !

    My Progression :
    1. 2008 KPMG 60k TC NYC Advisory
    2. 2010 70k Philly Audit
    3. 2011 85k -115k Reno Security Audit
    4. 2016 205k-311k Bay Area Security Compliance
    5. 2020 425k Bay are Security Compliance

Btw I was lucky to get lots of stints and opportunities - I have held the following titles
It audit manager , security compliance manager , auditor , security manager , cyber fraud operations , security product manager , blue team —- those all really shaped mg career ! Anyone from Intuit should be able to id me now :)

Is 150k for a no name right? That’s about what I’m at as a lead senior and not exactly at a no name company. Security, cyber and red/blue team roles have distinctly different skills and requirements from compliance.

  • I came from KPMG in IT Audit and now I’m doing data analytics but my TC went from
    60->70

I had experience in college with databases and I did a few python colleges and did a GitHub project

Now after 8 months of experience I’m getting opportunities with TC from 90-110k

I’m currently in the logistics industry

But I want to be in:
    E-commerce (amazon, grubhub )
    Payment transactions (stripe/PayPal)
    Media (Netflix )

Right now the future opportunities I have are in supply chain and e-commerce

Not sure where your experience lie but tech audit is a pigeon career and I felt the same as you needing to get out of it

I would say try doing Tech audit at like amazon and then try and transfer if you still stand tech audit

Or apply to smaller companies to just show that you got the skills in whatever you want to do and then apply to big companies after half a year
