I just wanted to thank this community, as well as the levels fyi community! I recently took a role with Amazon AWS as an L6 SDM and got a huge bump in total compensation. The transparency of these two communities was a huge help in understanding my worth and getting the most from my offers.

I was with my previous employer for a number of years and was underpaid, but didn’t mind so much because I loved my job. As the market started to heat up in the last couple of years, I finally decided the pay gap was too large to ignore. I applied to a number of companies, had several interviews, a couple of offers, and I decided to accept an offer from Amazon.

Yes, I’m aware there is a lot of hate for Amazon on here, but I have a couple of personal connections who work there and love it, so decided it was worth a shot.

Thanks again to this community!

Congrats, please update this post after a year.

Amazon’s RSUs vest 5% after the first year, this is by design.

even on a good team, you still get left wondering and stressing about whether you'll get PIPed. your manager (or some managers in the org) still has to put people as LE, OLR is extremely toxic. then every single year you deal with their cheap compensation philosophy. Amazon is better than no-name companies, but still way below other faang companies. use it as a stepping stone.

For me at Amazon it was the on - call. Seemed most teams had it. If you can find a team without it, then that’s great for you!

Also people there are competitive AF. Seems everyone is always trying to get ahead. I prefer just working on a team that’s more chill. Again, I’m sure you can find that there too

One of my friends left L7 . He used to make boat loads but not being a human finally caught on to him . But hey he can retire now . He is in therapy and taking BP meds and is on anti anxiety meds . I hope you land on a good team and maintain your humanity . I asked him if it was worth it . He didn’t have an answer but I suspect it was probably worth it for him .

I have a friend who retired at L8 recently and said working there and helping AWS grow was best part of his life. They made boatloads and have a couple properties they travel around to living their best life. Amazon is not perfect and we are all aware of the issues but land on a good team and hopefully you can thrive!
