Struggling to invest myself in personal development

As a SDE at Amazon, I have a screen time of ~ 8-9 hours a day on an average where I barely get time to do stuff for personal development. By personal development I mean like - learning new stuff related to my technical field, personality development, planning out my finances and getting my life figured out. After some introspection, I identified a primary reason why:

As a tech professional, I am habituated to consuming digital stuff like videos, courses, etc. Anything I need to know about, I watch a quick video about it. Then I try it out on my laptop, watching a SCREEN again. New content I create is also digital - blogs, notes, etc. After ~8-9 hours of screen time at work and ~2-3 hours of leisure screen time I have no capacity to look at a screen again. Isn't ~12 hours of screen time a lot already?

I can't be the only one facing this issue. But I have seen people not only working their day jobs, they have side gigs, do side projects and create digital content, ALL involving screen time. What do you guys do in general to have a healthy dose of screen time?

  • Idk if anyone has a healthy dose of screen time. What’s a healthy dose? 8 hours because that’s a work day? Or 8 hours of PC and 6 hours of TV?

12 hours a day is a lot I feel. How many hours of screen time do you have?

    • 8 is a minimum because those are 8 hours of work. What else is there to after work? Watch TV etc etc is all screen time. You can run and do other activities but most default to just different screen activity.

Well, you can cut the leisure screen time, that will give you a bunch more time.

  • Go for audiobooks and walking/running. Great way to disconnect screen time, but still remain engaged / not bored. Eventually remove audiobooks to get a healthy mind relaxation

This is a really good suggestion. Audio books are great. But only for slightly softer side of tech. Eg Phoenix project, Accelerate.
