Long story short I interviewed for a TAM role at GCP. Was told the feedback is awesome and they wanted me to speak to the hiring manager of the team.
Fast forward a few days the recruiter reaches back out to me and says the role that I applied for was already filled while I was interviewing. But they expected more headcount in the new year.
Now the recruiter is connecting with another hiring manager in a different geographical location to see if the hiring manager is interested in taking me on his team and letting me work remotely.
The question is am I being strung along or is the recruiter actually trying to do something? Has anyone else run into this issue what was the outcome?
Any advice would be appreciated.

I wasn't able to connect with the HM yet. It's just nuts because my interview loop was almost 3 months ago.
