Is FAANG worth it even when you like your current job and TC is reasonable?

Hello!
I’ve been conflicted with pursuing positions at Netflix or Apple. My TC at Nike is roughly 270k. I’m happy with it. I love the people I work with. At times the work can be boring and at times it can be very fun. Generally I have great work life balance and there are opportunities for me to grow. I also love sports, and the power of sport so being at Nike culturally is enjoyable. I’ve been at Nike 3 years now. I do feel comfortable here, but not necessarily complacent as I still want to grow and make a big impact for the company.

Yet I am 31 and I keep thinking that I am doing the wrong thing by not pursuing a FAANG company. I can make significantly more money which would ultimately help my family.

Have you struggled with this before? What makes you stay at your company and not go to FAANG? (Besides the time it takes to prep and interview for them)

    Don’t go chasing water falls.

You’re evaluating FAANG incorrectly. You’re assuming it’s more pay, while ignoring all the other stars that need to align in order for your assumption to be realized.

Finding a company you like is hard, you already found one.

Finding a team you like is hard, you already found one.

Finding a high paying job with WLB is hard, you already found one.

Finding a good boss is hard, sounds like you have one.

Don’t be stupid. Stay where you’re at, and practice the art of being humble and not wanting. You’re creating anxiety out of thin air. Nike is a great company, and if you’re still happy, still relatively challenged, still seeing opportunity to move around or up....

Meditate, find a hobby, get balance, whatever it is. Just appreciate you’ve got the stars to align, and know that most don’t, and that you’ll put all that at risk making a move.

Dumb advice, if you can make 500k take the 500k. The difference is after 5 years of working at Netflix you can retire to one of those areas making less like Guatamala. Money is not relative. If person A saves 50k in Texas and person B saves 75k in the bay area, the 75k doesn't diminish untill you spend it in the bay area. Do the rat race as long as you want to then move to somewhere cheaper and enjoy that money.

zz81 - I like your confidence. When was the last time you interviewed/got an offer? Things are not the same post pandemic. Too many fishes in the pond. Also, if the fear doesn’t exist wtf they say that on their culture slide. Maybe coz they don’t like h1 folks? As that would steer most h1 crowd away

Fear is real. Ask all mediocre performers in my group.

  • I switched and my TC doubled but wlb went down. I miss my old 10 hours per week job at Microsoft. The only motivation now is the money I see getting deposited in my account. It's a strong motivator, but I still miss wlb once every 2 days.

Your priorities won’t be met inside FAANG from what you describe.. if you like what you have at Nike, enjoy it! Grass is always perceived as greener on the other side.

I wish there was a more active / sporty culture at msft. Nike sounds great if you can achieve that TC while there.

@Nike. I was making 100k fresh out of college and was pretty happy about. Had great WLB at a startup ( 35 hrs including lunch break). Working on innovative technologies and had unlimited vacation. I saw posts on this app about FAAmG TC and decided to move. Now I make 200k. Work 50 hrs a week, don’t like the work I’m doing . And get only 2 weeks vacation in the year that I’m afraid to take.

^ but will your startup survive after 3 or 5 yrs. Some people don't mind working long hours in FAANG for better TC and job security.
