Thinking of moving to Netflix. I like the culture deck. But don’t want to be fired because my manager gets fired and the new one doesn’t like me, which is what happened to my friend who worked there.

At Google it feels like no one ever gets fired. I’m curious what the differential is.

What is the base firing rate at Netflix across SWE roles per year ?

You should research into the reasons of firing more than the rate. Almost all the firings I have seen here are result of politics and personal grudge. Managers are given absolute powers and can fire ICs immediately without any data. There is no performance review or any written record of how you are doing here, so manager can fire you anytime with random stories. Our Internal Blind lounge and Glassdoor is filled with these stories. I will post some screenshot of these.

fwiw, It wasn’t bad a few years ago, but the culture has slowly eroded over the last 2-3 years with poor quality hiring in the name of initiatives such as I&D. There are a lot of C players in many teams who are sheltered by the old timers to keep themselves relevant and these folks are ganging up against good engineers who could pose a threat to them. Managers have mostly sided with these political players and use their power to fire good engineers on moment’s notice.

That’s the biggest problem at Netflix. Managers can fire at their whim without any data or consulting HR. Same goes with hiring, even if all the engineers in the loop said No, manager can still hire the person without explaining it to anyone. This might have worked when the company was small, but now tons of people are affected. Netflix is going downhill from what I see.

The rate is usually "not me", until one day "it's me".

Netflix culture doc doesn’t represent the reality anymore. Engineering quality and talent is mediocre at best. Managers are technically bad, so can’t judge good vs bad software, design and architecture. People who question are retaliated and fired. Careful if you are joining. Good luck!
