Do you feel the level of interviewees has increased as a result of the 2-year pandemic situation?

Factors behind the hypothesis:

- it used to be much harder to spend time on LC or preparing for a specific interview while working somewhere else. Mostly would be in the evening, while now that’s anytime whenever you’re not too busy at current job.

- logistic cost of interviews used to be much higher. Travel, dress up, escape the office. Now it’s little to no disruption. Therefore people are just interviewing more and are more experienced at anytime.

- coding used to be on physical whiteboard, with more tolerance for small mistakes. On a virtual one, we naturally aim for higher quality.

  • I have seen both arguments:

Some say that hiring bar has reduced recently

Others say, people’s standard have risen during the pandemic and thus should have led to higher bar

Personally, I believe people make up stuff to make themselves feel better

Now Leetcode is a thing , I interview candidates at Meta, even on the phone screen level candidates are doing 2 problems plus follow ups , back in 2015 you could just get to an on-site with solving one , then you would get LC mediums in the on-site.

  • The candidates I've been getting have been real bad in the last couple of years. We are supposed to try to push them past the finish line and even then 9 out of every 10 run in the wrong direction hard enough to not be passable.

  • I think there is a much bigger range. A lot of people are looking and applying for anything. Get a lot more good people, but also a lot more people with no chance who are clearly hoping to get lucky.
