Worked at both places - there was a time when Amzn L7s were Gods - they architected and delivered ground breaking stuff. There were ~400-500 PEs throughout Amazon. Being a senior was a big deal. Lately there has been a dilution at both levels. Getting to senior is almost just being in good books of 3 managers and delivering a milestone across handful of engineers.

Google has had some similar dilutions for L6 but less at 7. Org heavily changes responsibilities, but L7s usually would be experts in a tech stack and have delivered multi year visions benefiting product and tech infra.

    L7 at Google >>> L7 at Amazon.

Also levels at G start at 3 and Amazon at 4.

Have worked with 'old school' Amazon principal (promoted internally to principal over 10 years ago, which was near impossible). They were indeed a god who could align hundreds of engineers on new architectural directions *and* dive in to projects ranging from mobile SDK development to backend storage and add value with direct code contributions to solve gnarly issues.

Have also worked with somebody hired as a principal more recently; can confirm they were useless, net negative to the company. Made lots of irrelevant comments about other people's designs, gave provably incorrect guidance about how various common pieces of internet infra worked etc..

  • Only someone at L7 or higher, can answer this. And to answer it more accurately, they would've had to have worked in both places .
Please take any signals here with a HUGE grain of salt.
Might be better just DMing such folks on LI

Really 400 PE in AWS. The PE directory across Amazon 2 years back showed 1000+ PEs. I assume majority of them were in AWS. The numbers today would be much higher, based on the promo success rate that I saw in recent OLRs.

Furthermore, PEs giving direction to 50-300 ppl is a big range. I would say it is closer to 50 than 300.
